In today's busy world, everyone needs convenience from professional businessmen to students, travelers all look for a system that is fast, secure and reliable. But how can this convenience be delivered? By RFID Cards, RFID stands for Radio Frequency IDentification which is a popular choice in modern scenarios as it helps in contactless access and secure data storage. Imagine no more swiping, inserting or waiting to enter a building, paying for service, or verifying identity- RFID Cards do all these in seconds as it is a wireless technology that uses radio waves to transmit data between RFID card and RFID reader. These cards are widely used in offices, hostels, libraries, college campuses, and even in wallets as part of credit or debit cards. RFID cards are designed to save your time, reduce Hassle, and keep your day moving smoothly.

What Is an RFID Card?

The word RFID stands for Radio Frequency IDentification. It is a wireless technology that uses radio waves to transmit data between RFID card and RFID reader. The RFID works in a unique manner as an RFID reader transmits an electromagnetic signal which is received by an RFID Card and transfers its stored data. The reader receives the data and sends it to the backend system. This system verifies the data and provides access, logs an entry etc. But easy identification is also done by magnetic stripes and cards, and RFID Cards are often compared with these. So, how are RFID cards different? These are plastic cards embedded with a small microchip and an antenna and work wirelessly while magnetic stripes cards require swiping which also wear out over time, Smart cards also require physical insertion or contact. In this way, RFID cards stand uniquely among all.

How Do RFID Cards Work?

RFID cards work through an easy procedure, providing convenience to users. RFID system operate using three main components which are as follows:-

RFID Card:- This card carries the information of an ID card user, it contains a microchip to store information such as identification data or access permissions then an antenna which receives and sends radio signals and lastly a plastic body that protects the internal components and gives the card its familiar shape.

RFID reader:- RFID reader is a device which communicates with an RFID card, the device sends out signals to detect nearby tags and read the data stored on the card's chip, the reader then sends this data to the backend system for processing.

Backend system:- The backend system stores all the information and when RFID Cards come in contact processes all the data to verify and takes action.

Types of RFID Cards

There are two types of RFID Cards:-

Passive RFID cards:-

Passive RFID Cards are contactless identification cards that utilize Radio-Frequency IDentification technology without an internal battery. It relies on the energy sent by an RFID reader. The read range of Passive RFID ID Cards is also less only a few meters and the cost is also lower.

Active RFID cards:-

Active RFID Cards come with their own built-in-power source like a small battery, it doesn't depend upon reader signals, it uses its own battery to continuously send the signals. The read range of Active RFID Cards is long, lying between 20 to 100+ meters making it a bit expensive but their performance and range makes it perfect for logistics, security and industrial environments.

Real-World Example

RFID Cards are widely used nowadays in offices, schools, hotels, colleges etc. but what is its benefit that everyone is using it? Imagine you are walking into your office and you tap your ID Badge on the reader at the door, it turns green, and the door unlocks. That's RFID in action- fast, contactless and seamless. Similarly, modern RFID Cards can also connect with your account making it easy to pay fare for transport, buy food and even store tickets digitally.

Applications of RFID Cards

RFID cards are widely used nowadays, from checking in offices to paying for bills, RFID Cards have become a perfect companion. The countless sectors where RFID Cards work are as follows:-

Offices and Campuses for Access control

Access control refers to the security system that manages who is allowed to enter certain spaces. RFID cards manage efficiently that only authorized people enter the premises. It is used in offices, campuses and secure facilities to manage who enters and when. As RFID Card is connected with a backend system which contains all the information of authorized people, whenever these people enter, the system automatically verifies their identity and grants access within seconds- without the need for manual checks.

Public transport System

RFID Cards have revolutionized the way the public uses public transport, making it more secure, convenient, and faster. Smart cards like metro cards, Bus passes are embedded with RFID chips. When the user taps the card on a  reader at a train gate or bus entrance the system reads the card's ID instantly, checks the stored balance and deducts the fare automatically within seconds.

Contactless Payments

RFID cards played crucial role for secure payments, earlier people carry money in wallets which requires more security, but the type has changed all because of RFID Card invention, an RFID-enabled credit, debit or prepaid card contains Chip and antenna, when you tap on a compatible payment terminal,  the RFID chip sends encrypted payment data wirelessly to reader and cut payment from bank directly in just a few seconds.

Library and Inventory System

Managing library and stocks was a burdensome work in the past, recording every borrowing, returning manually was a time-consuming task but with the invention of RFID Technology the process became automated, accurate and efficient. In Libraries every book has an attached RFID label containing a unique identifier and when a patron borrows or returns the book RFID reader instantly scans the tag making the record up-to-date with no manual errors.

Event management and ID Verification

RFID cards play a significant role in crowd management in events. RFID cards ensure that all persons must be at the right place. In events attendees are provided with wristbands, cards which have RFID chips, these cards are linked to their registration details( name, ticket type, access level). At entry RFID readers scan the card to verify identity ensuring fast and accurate check-ins.

Advantages of Using RFID Cards

There are endless benefits of using RFID Cards which are as follows:-

Fast and contactless:-

In RFID cards there is no need to swipe or insert the card whenever the card holder will pass through the RFID reader the information will be checked providing easy access.

Durable:-

These cards are much more durable as there is no need for physical wear as in Magnetic Strips cards which make their life longer.

Multiple Read Capability:-

RFID Technology can read multiple RFID cards at once there is no need to stand in a queue and wait to swipe these cards as information of these cards gets transmitted whenever the card holder passes by the Reader machine.

Easy Integration with Digital System:-

RFID Cards work seamlessly with software and cloud-based platforms, allowing for real-time data collection and reporting, automatic updates and tracking, and integration with mobile apps and smart systems.

Secure and Customizable:-

RFID cards offer utmost security with customizable features, RFID Cards offer strong security features that help protect sensitive data and control Access effectively. Also, RFID cards can be customized easily as per the choice of users.

Security Concerns and How to Address Them

Every coin has two sides, on one side RFID Cards have a number of benefits, but on the other it have some vulnerabilities also like:-

Data Theft:-

In the backend system all personal details are stored and hackers could attempt to skim or read data without permissions resulting in data theft.

Unauthorized Access:-

Poorly protected RFID tags might be duplicated easily, making it easy for unauthorized people to get access.

These are the two main problems which can impact severely so it is necessary that these problems must be solved. Here's some mitigation strategies to tackle the issue:-

Encryption:-

Encryption is the process of converting information into a coded format that is unreadable to unauthorized persons. This will protect the data transmitted between the card and reader.

Authentication:-

To ensure the security of data it is necessary that only authorized readers can interact with the card.

Use of RFID-blocking

sleeves/wallets:-

RFID blocking sleeves/ wallets are special accessories designed to protect your RFID-enabled cards from unauthorized scanning or data theft. They shield your card by using material like Metal that prevents hackers from secretly reading or cloning your card's information.
